If you’re not familiar with the Australian-born, Paris-based fashion designer ‘Martin Grant’, then the exhibition of 130 of his works currently on display at The Ian Potter Centre/ NGV Australia will provide a great opportunity. It’s stunning, sophisticated and chic.

A self-taught designer, Grant opened his first boutique in the Marais district of Paris in the late 1990s. During this time he formed a creative partnership with Christian Louboutin who created a range of shoes especially for the Martin Grant label. He regards ‘fashion as a form of sculpture’ as evidenced in the structural design of his work.

The exhibition showcases several of Grant’s evening gowns all of which are stunning. Two standouts are the red taffeta gown with a sweeping train. The other, a black bustier trimmed with Swarovski crystals and tulle skirt. Cate Blanchett, a long time follower of Grant, was illustrated wearing this gown for the 50th anniversary of Vogue Australia

Grant’s designs not only concentrate on evening wear. As a sculptor of fashion, his designs of outerwear and suiting leave nothing to be desired. He doesn’t follow trends but concentrates on structure and form. The results are exemplary tailoring and eternal style.

This is an exhibition that traces the life and work of one of Australia’s most successful designers. Following his passion from an early age, he collaborated with Christian Louboutin, leading photographers and milliners. This is a wonderful exhibition and offers a chance to admire cut and tailoring at its very best. Go take a look.
