The thing to wear

The kimono 着物 (translated means ‘thing to wear’) is featured in an outstanding exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria until October 6, 2025 and is definitely a must-see. The exhibition draws together exquisite kimono, paintings, posters, magazines and woodblock prints and a whole lot more.

The cut of the kimonos has basically remained the same over the centuries.

Individual choices in colours, patterns and fabrics over the centuries, tell of the changes in Japan and its society.

Kimono design manuals were illustrated with stunning woodblock prints, several of which are on display in the exhibition.

The exhibition showcases accessories including purses, wedding sandals and hair adornments.

Designers and stylists are continuing to reinvent the kimono in playful and sophisticated ways. Alternative fabrics and modern techniques in printing bring a full array of fashion items that make the unique kimono the thing to wear.

“If my floral kimono clung to my heart as it does to my body, how could I ever part with spring”
