Cartier , the 2026 NGV Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, from the V&A London showcases 400 jaw-dropping exhibits guaranteed to make you swoon. With such an expansive array of breathtaking pieces, we decided to simply feature a selection of those that were designed specifically for celebrities and high society figures.
The Essex Tiara
The tiara was originally commissioned in 1902 by the Earl of Essex to wear to the Coronation of King Edward VII. Since then is has been worn by renowned figures and most famously worn by Rihanna in the September 2016 issue of Magazine. Designed in the Garland style, it is complimented with a cuff bracelet of the same style designed in 1906. A truly stunning combination.
Elizabeth Taylor – ruby & diamond necklace
The breathtaking ruby and diamond necklace, part of a set including earrings, was gifted to Elizabeth Taylor by her third husband, Mike Todd in 1957. She wrote: “There was no mirror, so I looked into the water. The jewellery was so glorious — rippling red on blue like a painting… I shrieked with joy, put my arms around Mike’s neck, and pulled him into the pool.”
Wallis Simpson – Duchess of Windsor
Wallis Simpson accumulated one of the world’s most legendary jewellery collections. The designs oozed glamour and were often witty and playful, demonstrating her avant-garde approach to design.

Grace Kelly – our namesake
Grace Kelly widely known for her understated quiet elegance and iconic style, was given these necklaces by Prince Rainier III. Each necklace formed part of a set that included earrings and bracelet. The pearl necklace was purchased directly from Cartier whilst the gold leaf necklace set with coloured gemstones was commission for her by Prince Rainier.
Daisy Fellowes – socialite
The famous necklace was originally fastened on a cord of Indian silk, so it could be adjusted to be worn at varying lengths. It was remodelled by Cartier in 1963. Consisting of ancient sapphires, rubies, emeralds, diamonds, brought by Daisy Fellowes, many of which are engraved, form this amazing piece symbolising the Cartier ‘Tutti Frutti’ style inspired by India.

Princess Margaret
A nod to her full name, Margaret Rose, the diamond rose flower brooch was an all time favourite with the Princess. The brooch was worn on formal occasions including the coronation Elizabeth II but also when on tours and other less formal occasions.

The exhibition tells the story of one of the most famous jewellery houses in the world. Archival material, photographs and movie clips offer rare insights to the exceptional craftsmanship and inspiration for the original designs. There is so much to marvel at not least being the 30 tiaras, 24 of which are in the tiara room.
