Come with us as we stroll through the atmospheric Spice Bazaar of Istanbul. It teases your nose with aromas of every conceivable herb and spice while your eyes simply pop with the colourful and amazing displays.

Dating back to 1664 it became the centre for spice trading during the Ottoman Empire. Ottoman tiles and stones decorate the walls and floors as they have done over the many centuries.

The aromas of cinnamon, cumin, saffron, mint, thyme and many others – too many to identify – make for an overwhelming experience.

But it’s not all about spices. The endless assortment of exotic teas are fascinating.

The array of dried fruits is just another temptation. Such combinations as figs, dates and apricots stuffed with walnuts or almonds – it just goes on and on. Just take your pick.

And the bazaar would not be complete without Turkish delight and other sweet assortments.

The bazaar is not confined to spices – shops sell textile products, essences, cheeses and a vast array of gift items.

Having survived the tests of time (nearly four centuries) the Spice Bazaar of Istanbul is worth finding some time to check out when you’re visiting Istanbul.
