One of the many delights in visiting Japan is to discover the wearing of the kimono. Although generally worn for special occasions, it is not unusual to see young people embracing this traditional mode of dress.

When life’s milestones roll around – such as a wedding – it’s kimono time!

Essentially a straight cut robe, it is wrapped, left over right and held with a sash known as the obi. The decorative knot tied at the back has many variations often resembling flowers, animals and birds. Tabi socks and zori sandals along with decorative hair accessories, complete the picture.

Seeing the traditional dress being alive and well in Japan is an unexpected discovery. Long may it last.
