You will find it located on northern side of Greece, in Thessaly. This breathtaking landscape of gigantic monoliths is home to the famous Meteora monasteries.
During the 9th and 10th centuries, Orthodox Christian hermit monks were the first ones to use the cliffs of Meteora for spiritual reasons. The area provided a location between heaven and earth.
During Byzantium times 24 monasteries were built. Today, only 6 remain. The monks created scaffolds for climbing the rocks. Later, nets with hooks together with rope ladders were used. Baskets also played a role, being pulled up by the monks.
This is an exceptional place. It is a combination of extraordinary natural formations, incredible architectural achievement, with a religious and spiritual character.
It is possible to visit the monasteries. We chose St Stephen Monastery, which is accessible by a bridge from the road connecting it to Kalabaka. Its beginning dates back to the early 12th century and the first hermit monks who settled on the cliff.
Further construction in the 18th and 19th centuries, gave the monastery its current form. In 1961 the monastery became a convent. The courtyard and gardens are peaceful and well maintained.
Once inside, there are various buildings and chapels to explore including a post-Byzantine temple.
A visit to Meteora is like no other. Be sure to put it in your itinerary when visiting Greece.
